TRAI Pulls Up Three Mobile Operators Over Number Portability Irregularity
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has pulled up telecom operators Bharti AirtelIdea Cellular, andLoop Mobiles for allegedly violating mobile number portability (MNP) regulations, and issued a summons to their officials via a Delhi court. Apparently, these three operators have not abided by the norms, and have rejected MNP requests from subscribers in various circles including Mumbai, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. The companies have also not provided complete information, as sought by TRAI, about porting requests rejected by them.
Mobile subscribers were empowered by TRAI last year by introducing the MNP provision, allowing them to switch to any mobile operator while retaining their old number. This initiative was done with the motive of keeping the operators on their heels to provide better service than their competitors, while protecting subscriber interests. However, not all operators have been very compliant with the MNP services and there have been some irregularities reported regarding the same.
