ALAN TURING'S 100TH BIRTHDAY : GOOGLE DOODLES A TURING MACHINE‎

Alan Turing with two colleagues and a Ferranti computer in January 1951. Turing had previously been involved with the construction of both the Colossus and, later, the Automatic Computing Engine.

More information about:Alan Turing

Alan Turing was born on 23 June, 1912, in London. His father was in the Indian Civil Service and Turing's parents lived in India until his father's retirement in 1926. Turing and his brother stayed with friends and relatives in England. Turing studied mathematics at Cambridge University, and subsequently taught there, working in the burgeoning world of quantum mechanics. It was at Cambridge that he developed the proof which states that automatic computation cannot solve all mathematical problems. This concept, also known as the Turing machine, is considered the basis for the modern theory of computation.
In 1936, Turing went to Princeton University in America, returning to England in 1938. He began to work secretly part-time for the British cryptanalytic department, the Government Code and Cypher School. On the outbreak of war he took up full-time work at its headquarters, Bletchley Park.
Here he played a vital role in deciphering the messages encrypted by the German Enigma machine, which provided vital intelligence for the Allies. He took the lead in a team that designed a machine known as a bombe that successfully decoded German messages. He became a well-known and rather eccentric figure at Bletchley.
After the war, Turing turned his thoughts to the development of a machine that would logically process information. He worked first for the National Physical Laboratory (1945-1948). His plans were dismissed by his colleagues and the lab lost out on being the first to design a digital computer. It is thought that Turing's blueprint would have secured them the honour, as his machine was capable of computation speeds higher than the others. In 1949, he went to Manchester University where he directed the computing laboratory and developed a body of work that helped to form the basis for the field of artificial intelligence. In 1951 he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society.
In 1952, Turing was arrested and tried for homosexuality, then a criminal offence. To avoid prison, he accepted injections of oestrogen for a year, which were intended to neutralise his libido. In that era, homosexuals were considered a security risk as they were open to blackmail. Turing's security clearance was withdrawn, meaning he could no longer work for GCHQ, the post-war successor to Bletchley Park.
He committed suicide on 7 June, 1954.

THE 5 THINGS THAT YAHOO SEARCH CAN DO, BUT NOT GOOGLE

Google is the world’s favorite web search engine but there are a couple of cool things that you can do only in Yahoo!. Take a look:
1. Compose emails from the Yahoo! search box.
Type !mail abc@xyz.com in the Yahoo! search box and it will automatically compose a new email message for you in Yahoo! mail.
yahoo song lyrics search2. Get Lyrics of any song or your favorite artist.
Type madonna lyrics (for lyrics of Madonna songs) ormadonna material girl lyrics (for lyrics of a particular song)
3. Specifiy the order of search keywords in queries
Say you want only web pages where word x comes before y but not vice versa, then just put the search query in Square Brackets. An example:
[Sylvester Stallone] – will only return web pages where the word Sylvester appear before Stallone.
search wikipedia flickr ebay4. Search your favorite websites from Yahoo! itself.
For instance, type !wiki google in Yahoo! search box to search Google in Wikipedia.com. Other popular shortcuts are !ebay, !amazon, and !flickr. You can also execute these from the Firefox search box without changing the default search engine.
5. linkdomain – An undocumented Yahoo Web search operator.
A quick question – Can you find the number of articles on Wikipedia website that link to CNN.com ? It’s almost impossible to get this data from Google but you can do so quite easily in Yahoo! with the incredibly useful linkdomain operator. The answer is:
linkdomain:cnn.com site:wikipedia.org
yahoo linkdomain search
Or take another example – How many stories on TechCrunch actually link to the PayPerPost, Arrington’s favorite topic. The answer here is:
site:techcrunch.com linkdomain:payperpost.com

WILL GOOGLE EMPLOYEES READ YOUR GMAIL ?

gmail logo
All your private and confidential emails are stored in your Gmail mailbox but are they secure? Can a Google employee working on the Gmail product read your messages?
In theory, the answer could be yes. Christopher Nguyen, who was earlier responsible for Google Apps operations at Google, shared this on Quora:
A small number of GMail related engineers have access to the servers as a matter of necessity to do their jobs; a very small number of people actually access the contents as a matter of necessity to do their jobs, and even then, almost always only the associated metadata.
The rest have to file a request and justify any access they ever need, which is extremely rare. All have to sign paperwork re users’ privacy at the risk of dismissal & legal action, knowing that whatever they do is discoverable. And ultimately, an internal culture of respecting users’ privacy helps keep one another in check.
Google also serves contextual text ads in Gmail and these ads are triggered based on the content of the email message that your currently reading. Obviously it is the bots that are scanning your Gmail messages for relevant keywords but Microsoft, with a hope that some Gmail users will shift to Hotmail, is using this point to target Google on privacy.
Some email services, like Gmail, actually read the contents of your mail (both sent and received, even if you aren’t a Gmail user but just sending to someone who is) in order to decide what kind of ads to serve up to you. They may call it “scanning” and attempt to equate it with less invasive activities like “checking for spam” but it’s quite different. For you, and the people you send mail to, it’s not spam, it’s personal.
Microsoft has also released a video, titled the Gmail Man, highlighting this Gmail behavior. Microsoft uploaded the video to YouTube, a platform owned by Google, and it isn’t therefore surprising that the video has garnered more dislikes than likes – after all, most YouTube users are also Gmail users and they aren’t buying Microsoft’s argument.

Find the Perfect sized Wallpapers for Your Desktop and Mobile with Bing!

You can use images of any size as backrounds of your mobile or desktop, to do so we usually download a image that exactly match the screen resolution as the screen will fits to your screen size.

You might have come across the images in Google, you can find the size of the pictures. For example your desktop screen resolution is 1680*1050,specify the dimensions in the query - imagesize:[width]x[height] keyword(s) – and it will only display wallpapers that exactly fit that size .

Then What is the Special About Wallpaper Search in Bing!
Search Wallpaper Images on Bing

While you are downloading in google you need to know the resolution of your screen, but the best advantage in Bing is you need not know the size of the screen to which you are searching the wallpaper because Bing will get you a perfect-sized wallpapers that you are looking for.

Step 1. Go to bing.com/images and search for some pictures (let’s say you’re looking for “abstract art” wallpapers).

Step 2. Once you have the first set of images, click Size –> Wallpaper in the sidebar.

Bing will smartly filter all the images that exactly match your current screen resolution without you having to specify the pixels in the search query.

Find Wallpapers from the Mobile Phone
The same trick works for mobile phones as well but there’s a small problem – when you open Bing.com in the browser of your mobile phone, it will automatically redirect to the m.bing.com and it doesn’t have the “wallpaper” search feature.
The workaround is simple though. When you are on the mobile version of bing.com, scroll down and click the link that says “desktop” – it will then switch to the regular desktop version of Bing on your mobile. Now when you use image search, Bing will automatically use the resolution of your mobile phone for wallpapers.
Update: You can also use this tip to find perfect-sized wallpapers for your iPad – just open bing.com on the iPad and use the “wallpaper” option.
